Tasty dessert for every generation Fabulous fresh vanilla vla!

A creamy, semi-sweet pudding substance served (cold) in every household in The Netherlands. It’s especially loved by kids.   The dessert became so popular that it deserved to be taken up in the dictionary. Vla has been around since the 18th Century. Nowadays there are many varieties on sale in the supermarket, but as always, it’s a lot better to make it yourself. That what makes a kid smile, makes you smile. So, come on you’ll be serving tonight’s special: Vla!

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Serves: 2 adults
Difficulty: easy









Ingredients (serves 2 adults)

  • 20 grams of maizena
  • 500 ml of milk
  • 40 grams of sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • pinch of salt
  • vanilla




Take a small bowl and pour in the egg yolk. Save the egg white. This can be used to make a delicious meringue later.  Store the egg white in an ice cube tray in your freezer.

Add 20 grams of maizena, 40 grams of sugar, a pinch of salt and mix it together with a few tablespoons of milk. Open the vanilla and add the seeds (save the stick).

Take a pan and place all the ingredients inside (including the vanilla stick). Keep on stirring until it boils. Stir, stir, stir for another 3 minutes. Now you can let your vla cool down outside the fridge. Once cool, place your bowl of vla, covered with foil, in the fridge.

Your dessert is ready to be served!
